Three kilometres South of Sunny Beach and some 30 km North of Bourgas a narrow causeway connects the old town of Nessebar with the mainland onto which it has extended recently. Nowadays the town numbers 8 000 inhabitants involved mainly in tourism.
Nessebar`s quaint atmosphere is due to its picturesque situation, to the coastal nineteenth - century architecture, the best of which has been preserved, and to its unique collection of medieval churches. The new construction has been carefully designed to match the old houses on both sides of narrow cobbled streets and is strictly watched because the whole old part of Nessebar is under the protection of UNESCO . It is also an exquisite seaside resort with what are regarded by many as the best beaches in Bulgaria.
